Here But You’re Gone

In dedication to my Mother.

Like chalk drawn art in the summer rain,
I have watched you fade away.
As those loving eyes that nurtured me,
Grow emptier each day.
How I wish that you could comfort me,
Like you did when I was young,
Or even could recall my name
Or remember I’m your son.
Oh, It’s so hard to hold on,
When you’re here, but you’re gone.

Well his tired eyes reflect upon,
All those moments with his bride,
Now their memories are but his alone,
There’s an emptiness inside.
And he tries so hard to keep her close
But she always wants to roam.
How it breaks his heart to treat her like
A prisoner in their home.
Oh it’s so hard to hold on,
When she’s here but she’s gone.

Once upon a time you watched us grow,
Now we watch you in reverse,
As those child-like eyes look back we know,
That you’re only growing worse.
Though we cannot catch those memories,
As they circle down the drain,
We hope that we can ease your mind
And bring comfort through your pain.
Oh, it’s so hard to hold on,
When you’re here but you’re gone.

I know heaven holds a special place,
For all those who’ve been through hell.
And that one day you’ll break free again,
From this broken earthly shell.
You’ll be free from pain and free from tears
Free from lonely empty stares
But most of all you’ll take back all those memories of your years.

But until that time we promise you
We’ll do the best that we can do
To love you like you loved us since that day when we were born,
And we’ll help you to hold on,
When you’re here, but you’re gone.
